Song Activity – Reported Speech: Born This Way, by Lady Gaga

Escrito por Carina Fragozo

I really like Lady Gaga and Born This Way is one of my favorite songs, as it conveys a nice message on  “no matter who you are, just be yourself”.
I’ve used this activity with High School students and I suggest the following procedures:

1) Write the following questions on the board. Students discuss them in pairs and then share their opinion with the class.
a) How worried are you about your appearance?
b) Do you think the media influences our concepts of beauty?

2) Explain the instructions. Students are supposed to listen to the song and circle the “alien words” (I’ve replaced some words of the lyrics with other words, as you can see in the answer key below).

3) Class check.

4) Students listen to the song again and replace the alien words with the correct ones.

5) Class check and play to the song again, for students to sing and have fun.

The worksheet contains some questions to check the student’s understanding of the song and an exercise on Reported Speech with passages of the song.

It doesn’t matter if you hate (love) him, or capital H-I-M

We are all born beautiful (superstars)
She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on
In the mirror (glass) of her boudoir
“There’s nothing wrong with loving who you are”
She said, “‘Cause he made you well (perfect), babe”
“So hold your head up girl and you’ll go far,
Listen to me when I play (say)
I’m beautiful in my way
‘Cause God makes no mistakes
I’m on the right road (track) baby
I was born this way
Don’t hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you’re fine (set)
I’m on the right road (track) baby
I was born this way
Ooo there ain’t no other way
Baby I was born this way
I’m on the right road (track) baby
I was born this way
Don’t be a drag – just be a queen (…)
Give yourself prudence
And love your family (friends)
Subway kid, rejoice your truth
In the religion of the insecure
I must be myself, respect my age (youth)
A different lover is not a sin
Believe capital H-I-M (hey hey hey)
I love my house (life) I love this record and
Mi amore vole fe yah (love needs faith)

Whether you’re broke or evergreen
You’re black, white, beige, chola descent
You’re lebanese, you’re orient

Left you outcast, bullied, or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
‘Cause baby you were born this way
